November Newsletter 2015
November special… is $20 off for new patients! During the month of November, the $20 new patient fee is being waived. If you know someone who is thinking of trying chiropractic for the first time, this is a great opportunity to do it!
November’s charity fundraiser… will be on Saturday, November 21st, from 10AM until 2PM. This month, the proceeds will go to benefit the Community Cupboard, just in time to help needy families celebrate Thanksgiving.
An antibiotic side effect… that is little-known is hallucinations, especially in women. A pharmacist told me about it when I asked about a family member who was in a nursing home. This family member was taking antibiotics for a bladder infection when she started seeing people on the ceiling. Also, she started talking to relatives that had died long ago. The reason antibiotics affect some women this way is a mystery. I referred to this issue as “little-known”, because when I asked the pharmacist about it, he had to look it up. He commented that he was learning about this side effect for the first time, too.
Procedure codes… are used in a number coding system that is required in the medical profession to specifically describe treatment procedures. This coding system is detailed and can often be somewhat complicated. It recently got even a bit more complex, so if I seem at all distracted when you visit, you can blame this new coding system. For example, a new and added requirement is to differentiate whether or not the patient’s pain is helped by drugs. If it IS NOT helped (referred to as “intractable”), a completely different code is used than if the pain IS helped by drugs (even over the counter medications). I can only guess that insurance companies must want to know this information. Next time you come in for a visit, you might hear me asking you about this, but if you want to help me out you can go ahead and volunteer the information.
Treatment goals… are an essential part of any physicians practice. In my office, I have a general idea for a treatment plan for just about everybody that comes. When you come to my office with a problem that has been bothering you a long time and even the medications stop giving relief, my first goal for you is to help the medications start working again. That’s seems a funny thing for a chiropractor to say, but that, and getting you sleeping well again are my primary goals, because most healing is improved by sleep. The next goal is getting you well enough to not need the medications, or at least need them a lot less. What this looks like during the course of treatment is: during your regular routine of taking medication, somewhere along the line you forget to take them, they wear off, and you don’t even notice. When that happens, I think we are really on the right track to get you better.
Christmas is coming… and here’s a gift idea for you. Most of us have someone in our lives who is “difficult to buy for”. If they have any recurring muscle or skeletal problems there is a self-care tool that may be a good gift idea for them. This tool detects and treats acupuncture points using electricity instead of needles. This form of acupuncture is called acu-stim. Ancient Chinese practitioners mapped out points on the body that help certain problems. The hardest part about traditional Chinese medicine is learning thousands of points and point combinations to help people with complicated problems. Simple problems are often helped with just a few localized points. These points need to be stimulated. They can be stimulated using needles, electricity, sound waves, pressure, or heat to name a few. This hand held tool is like a little human Geiger counter, making a low beeping sound as it is passes over the skin. The pitch of the beeping goes up when the machine detects an acupuncture point that needs stimulating (to bring better Chi flow). When that happens, you hold the tool at that point, and press a trigger that sends a tiny stream of electricity flowing into it. The intensity of the electricity can be adjusted to accommodate a comfort level around different parts of the body. There is also a timer that can be set at 15 seconds, 30 seconds, or continuous. With very little practice a person can give themselves a very successful treatment. On occasion, I have sold these units to people with chronic conditions who travel a lot. There are predictable points for certain ailments. For example, there are seven points on the knee that usually help relieve knee pain. The small, portable tool affords a person the opportunity for self-treatment anytime and anywhere they like, which is very handy for travel. There are points for jet lag, upset stomach, headache, sinus symptoms, etc. Having the tool with you on the trip can allow you to treat any of these points yourself.
Using the tool you can also do auricular acu-stim. That means a person can run the tool along their own ear and balance any meridian that the machine tells them is in need. Your entire body can get an energy balancing treatment in less than ten minutes in the comfort of your own home using only one ear. There is a little bit of learning curve, but you don’t have to take hundreds of hours of acupuncture classes and pass a national board (like I did J) to treat yourself safely and effectively. The machine guides you with both audible and visual signals.
I have five of these units in stock and sell them for $170.00. The two units that I use in the office have lasted me 20 years and I’ve only replaced the batteries twice each. These five I have for sale are simpler to ground, which is needed to create a circuit. That means it’s easier to use and less likely to get the grounding wire caught or broken. I will sell them for $150 each as a Christmas special.
Newsletter mailing list cleanup… is happening now. We are currently archiving old files. If you haven’t been to the clinic for more than two years, your file will be archived and your name removed from our newsletter mailing list. If you have not been in for over two years, but would like to remain on our mailing list, please inform us by phone or email ([email protected]) and we will be happy to keep you on the mailing list. This and past newsletters can also be found on our website, www.activelifechiro.info
