‘Micro-breaks’ have a cumulative benefit… beyond what might be presumed to occur while doing it. A ‘micro-break’ is a momentary pause (a minute or less) that includes simple stretching along with one or two deep breaths. Japanese research has shown that ‘micro-breaks’ particularly help people who work long hours, whether it is heavy labor or sitting at a desk all day. While such a brief and simple effort may seem insignificant, when done consistently over time, the cumulative effect is a positive one for both mind and body. Here are a couple of those moves.
E Stand up and reach both arms overhead with fingers splayed apart. Now, arch the body backwards a little bit and tip the head up. Take a deep breath in, then out, and done. You can add one more part to this by slightly tilting your upper body to reach with both arms to the right and then to the left, taking a deep breath while stretching each side.
E This stretch is called the “hip slide and glide“. Stand in front of a chair with your feet a bit more than shoulder width apart. Put your hands on the seat with slightly bent arms, extending your buttocks just a bit behind your heels. Hold for 30 seconds, then shift your pelvis to one side and hold 20-30 seconds, then repeat on the other side. Keep your back straight; if it curls or ‘rounds’, then raise the seat or use your desk top.
It is possible that ‘micro-breaks’ have become more necessary because the average U.S worker has stopped taking scheduled breaks (even though legally entitled to them) Science would ask, “What aspect of ‘micro-breaks’ is the most helpful? Is it the break from sitting, from looking at a computer screen, from laboring over a task? Or is it the actual stretch that is helping the most?” We’ll have to wait and see what is uncovered. In the meantime, one thing we do know for sure, is that ‘micro-breaks’ are good for us.
A new idea for an old problem… studies have shown that hamstring flexibility improved remarkably after rolling a semi-squishy ball (like a tennis ball) under the foot while sitting down. The anatomist said that rolling a ball under the foot stretches the fascia (pronounced fash-a) around the tendons and muscles. Fascia is a spider web-like connective tissue that encases each organ and muscle group. This fascial stretching initiates the relaxation of an entire chain of fascia that extends all the way up the body to the skull. The best measure of improvement in the flexibility of the fascia can be observed by reaching to touch the toes, known as the classic hamstring stretch. Fascia used to be thought of as tissue that had little purpose or function except to hold things together. Studied more over the last few decades, it’s been known for a while now that fascia has its own nerve supply and is able to communicate things like stretch, pain, and pressure to the adjoining fascia. Practical application of these facts will allow you to alleviate tight hamstrings with stretches that you may find easier and more comfortable to do. To help your hamstrings, sit in a chair in a carpeted room, roll a tennis ball under your foot firmly, repeat on other foot, and then proceed with your regular hamstring stretches.
A NON-allergy alert has been issued… for peanut butter and eggs given to infants. It may be beneficial to introduce peanut butter and eggs into an infant’s diet after all. Two studies support other evidence that very early exposure to common allergens is actually protective against allergic reactions. Earlier studies reported similar findings. One of them was an observational data study that looked at the frequency of childhood allergies in relation to the type of environment in which they lived. Do children raised on farms, who are exposed to things like animals, hay, straw, and dust have less chance of developing allergies than their city dwelling counterparts? It used to be thought that early exposure caused a histamine reaction because the baby’s body perceived it as a health threat. Histamine is a chemical produced and stored within the body. It is a part of our immune response and is released during an allergic reaction. It is now understood that the immune system requires stimulation as well as support in order to develop strong defenses. On a side note, there is very promising cancer research based on this idea. Modified viruses (like measles) are injected into the patient, and they stimulate the immune cells to kill not just the virus, but the cancer cells too…
