Are pain-killing drugs harmful… and are those who can prescribe them being targeted as a result? Current statistics show a remarkable and alarming increase in the number of overdose deaths from prescription opioid pain relievers from 2002 thru 2011. In 2015, 15,000 people died from overdoses involving prescription opioids. Every day, over 1,000 people are treated in emergency rooms for misusing prescription opioids. In many states, prescription drug deaths now surpass traffic fatalities, which used to be the number one cause of death in the U.S. As a result of these statistics, regulatory agencies are restructuring the business of prescription pain management in terms of who can prescribe opioids, and how much. Unfortunately, in this attempt to protect the general public, some unfortunate patients who suffer from incurable pathologies are experiencing unnecessary difficulty acquiring their medication. For these patients, these medications enable them to function and continue to live a productive, less painful life. As a doctor that is dedicated to helping people out of pain without using drugs and surgery, I still think that it seems unreasonable and cruel to make it difficult for them to get the medicine they legitimately need.
It would appear to be a good thing that we now have medical marijuana, because it does help a lot of people, while it doesn’t seem to interfere with their mental faculties. Recreational use is not the same.
Inflammation is often associated with pain. I am an advocate for herbal and nutritional supplements that help reduce it. The body uses inflammation in response to stress from diet, lifestyle, or environment. There are times when the body becomes so inflamed for unknown reasons, that the inflammation becomes an even greater problem than the stresses that the body was trying to battle. Here are some nutrients and herbal remedies that can help fight it:
Turmeric/curcumin is a spice in your cupboard, but you need to take about a teaspoon (500 mg) a day to effect results. Statistics have shown that populations of countries that commonly eat turmeric on their food have less arthritis. Turmeric does need some pepper to be assimilated properly.
Boron (3 mg a day) is something to help bones that nutritionists have known about for several decades now. A study was done observing non-dairy consuming cultures in Asia to figure out why women in those cultures have stronger bones than women in the U.S. who do consume dairy. The researchers determined the reason to be the boron in the seaweed and sea vegetables commonly found in an Asian diet. It is now thought that boron also helps cartilage and reduces inflammation.
Magnesium is a mineral that is a natural muscle relaxant. Minerals in general seem to be difficult to get enough of, even for people who eat very healthy. It is not hard to consider that a good organically bound multi-mineral supplement that includes trace minerals would help the body in many ways. Methyl-sulfonyl-methane also known as MSM is more or less in this category.
Herbs like ginger, basil, barberry, oregano, rosemary, Chinese skullcap, Chinese gold thread, hu zhang, white willow bark, and hops are also helpful in reducing inflammation. Arnica montana can either be taken orally or topically applied to the skin using an ointment or cream. Emu oil has received more attention lately as a pain-reliever, and can be purchased by itself or as an ingredient in analgesic creams made for sore muscles. Both arnica and emu oil are different from most analgesic creams in that they are fragrance-free and do not burn or sting when applied.
Arden Mark’s Arthritis ‘Cure’… is a regimen that was developed by a patient of mine. Years ago, when Arden came to my office with fingers swollen like little sausages and in a lot of pain, I was unable to help her. Diagnostic tests revealed that she had rheumatoid arthritis (RA). As a retired nurse, she knew about the preferred medications that would be prescribed and made the decision not to let herself get dependent on expensive pain killing drugs. She researched anything and everything nutritional that might help her, and eventually developed a plan that she followed consistently. Before long, the pain and swelling in her hands and feet was gone. It is thought that RA is incurable, but it seems she did so using this regimen. She said she purchased all her supplements and the protein powder at affordable prices. In 2000, she calculated the cost per day to be about $1.00. She kindly gave me her permission to share her name and information with you. Here is the regimen:
Make a smoothie using whey powder, 1 scoop of hydrolyzed collagen, and juice of your choice.
Take the following supplements daily: Glucosamine (3000 mg), Borage Oil (1 capsule), Primrose Oil (1 capsule), Flax Oil (1 capsule 1000 mg), Grape Seed Extract (2 capsules), Vitamin E (800 mg), Gingko Biloba (2 Tablets), Vitamin C (1500 mg), Vitamins A and D (1 Capsule), and a multivitamin with lutein.
A National Day of Prayer event… will be held in the Ute Pass Cultural Center on Thursday, May 4th. There will be a sing-along from 5:30 to 6 pm, followed by prayer from 6 to 7:30. Please feel free to be a part of praying for the schools, churches, military, government, media, and families of our great nation.
