Saturday Fundraiser…Thank you for helping make our last fundraiser such a great success! Thanks to you, we were able to raise $170.00 for TCRAS. In April, we will be doing another fundraiser on the last Saturday of the month. If you have a friend or neighbor that is reluctant to try chiropractic or wants to try a needle-less form of balancing all 12 ordinary meridians, this is a prime opportunity. For a donation amount of your choice, you can receive a chiropractic adjustment or needle-less acupuncture here at the Active Life Clinic. The fundraiser will be on the last Saturday, April 26th, from 10 am to 2 pm. No appointments will be made; it will be on a first come, first served basis. All donations will go to benefit the Community Cupboard.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)… is a blood clot (thrombus) in a deep vein, usually in the legs. A common symptom is sharp pain in one leg when starting to walk or exercise. The pain quickly becomes so severe that the person needs to sit down to examine their leg, and upon doing so, the pain dissipates. Another, more subtle sign, is the tendency to have one leg swell during the day that then ‘shrinks’ during the night. A critical symptom is one or more bright red/purple streaks in the lower leg. If this is observed, one should immediately go to the emergency room. A blood clot in the leg can be extreme and yet go relatively unnoticed. I know of a runner who noticed his legs were tiring more easily, while he was also losing strength and stamina. When examined by a doctor, it was discovered he had a clot that ran the entire length of one leg. In another case, my elderly father fell and bruised himself, was sore, but had no broken bones and no one thought much about it. Within a couple of weeks, however, he became short of breath so quickly that he was taken to a doctor. The doctor found that he had a very long blood clot that required a week in the intensive care unit. DVTs are tricky that way. A good way to get your circulation checked is thru the “Life Line Screening” company. Using ultrasound, their team of professionals is able to check the carotid artery, abdominal aorta, peripheral arteries, and heart rhythm. They also can do a heel check for osteoporosis. The company sets up temporary offices at various locations within a community or region throughout the year. To find a convenient location and schedule a screening, either visit their website at www.lifelinescreening.com, or call (866) 964-9087. On a preventative note, wearing compression hose, also known as support stockings can help. These are knee-high socks that gently squeeze the lower leg, supporting and keeping veins from sagging. This lets blood flow up the leg more easily. These socks can be especially helpful if you expect to be sitting for extended periods, like on a long car or plane trip or in meetings and classrooms all day, and also if you are on your feet a lot, like a cashier, nurse, or teacher. You should be able to find these hose in the pharmacy department of any major retailer.
Anti-Inflammatory herbs and spices… can play a significant role in reducing the symptoms of chronic inflammation. These herbs are effective in inhibiting the reactionary processes that typically turn into chronic inflammation. Following is a list of herbs and spices that have anti-inflammatory benefits.
Hops alpha acids is the bitter element in beer, acts as an analgesic, and inhibits production of inflammatory substances in the body.
Turmeric (also called curcumin), neutralizes and inhibits the pain molecules, and is also an anti-oxidant.
White willow bark has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Its key element is salicin. Aspirin was developed from salicin. By itself, salicin is not usually sufficient to reduce pain or inflammation, but can be made more effective when combined with other natural pain-relieving substances like these next substances mentioned on the list.
Ginger is a “‘hot” spice that has been used in Ayurverdic and Chinese medical treatments for centuries, and is well known to aid digestion. It increases circulation, especially in the pelvic and abdominal regions, and can also reduce pain, stiffness and immobility.
Rosemary is often used topically on skin. Taken internally, it can relieve pain, soothe the stomach, ease cramps, reduce arthritis and bronchitis symptoms, improve circulation, reduce cold symptoms, and reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue and lupus.
Holy basil is an herb commonly used to treat colds, flu, asthma, diabetes, headaches, ear aches, and stomach upset. It has also been used to treat heart disease, malaria, fever, tuberculosis, mercury poisoning, snake and scorpion bites. However, side effects of decreased fertility and thinning of the blood have been reported.
Green tea contains a substance called catechin that fights and prevents cell damage, reduces heart problems, improves brain/memory function, and helps stabilize blood sugar levels. Theanine, another substance found in green tea is a natural relaxant and also helps lower blood pressure.
Hu Zhang, also called Mexican bamboo, has been known to reduce arthrosclerosis, heart disease, constipation, gallstones, liver disease, and menstrual problems. It also seems to help inhibit the growth rate of cells (anti-tumor).
Chinese Gold thread is an antibiotic and antifungal that can treat arteriosclerosis, urinary tract and eye infections, has anti-cramping effects, and reduces symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea. Contains tannins that help heal wounds, act as a mild sedative, and inhibit some cell growth.
Barberry is an anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial herb that helps reduce and treat infections. It helps treat liver disease, psoriasis, and cleanses a congested system.
Often paired with fennel seed to treat fevers.
Chinese skullcap is an herb used to treat gastrointestinal, kidney, and respiratory infections, hay fever, fever, liver problems, headache, red eyes, flushed face, seizures, epilepsy, nervous tension, relieve a bitter taste, psoriasis, decrease some cell growth, and decrease inflammation.
Oregano is an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, digestive aid (especially colon), anti-allergenic, reduces urinary tract problems, stimulates pelvic blood flow, and loosens phlegm from respiratory ailments.
Many of these substances have been combined to be taken in pill form, and are sold at many health purveyors, including HERE at Active Life. Ask me for more information.
