Dr. Steen's November Newsletter
Cold season is upon us… and fears about Ebola fill the news. Considering that flu shots were not effective last year, what can we do to protect ourselves? Boosting the immune system is a good start. Vitamin C is a powerful immunity booster when taken with zinc and Echinacea. Echinacea helps the body utilize the C and zinc. If Echinacea is taken alone, it will deplete the inner storage of the zinc and C in about two weeks. Taken in combination, though, these three can be taken all winter long. Numerous testimonials say it is a great way to help ward off colds. Personally, I’ve had good results with Zicam products, which are mostly Zinc and C. Pycnogenol (otherwise known as proanthocyanidin) is also a helpful supplement that was originally made from French and Canadian maritime pine bark. Now it is also extracted from grape seeds. Pycnogenol has flavonoids, catechins, and phenolic acid. The benefit of improved cell wall integrity is similar to that of vitamin C, but pycnogenol is not as acidic as vitamin C.
Simple lifestyle changes will help the immune system. Drink even more water, get enough rest, avoid getting chilled and definitely avoid eating sugar. Dairy products often may cause increased production of phlegm and mucus, and should be avoided when one is fighting a cold. Washing hands with soap and water really does help reduce exposure to viruses. It also helps to wash the handle of the shopping carts in the store. If someone in the household is showing symptoms of illness, use disinfectant to wash daily, the door knobs, phone receivers and light switches. Other things to be especially careful about in terms of not spreading germs are: sharing a phone, a cup or eating utensil with someone who is ill.
Colloidal silver… is water that has had a few molecules of silver electronically infused into it, and has been around for centuries. Silver attaches itself to viruses and germs and renders them unable to cause infection. It is a huge help with sinus infections. Silver baby spoons, though small, cause a baby to ingest a few molecules of silver that would act as a natural antibiotic. Humans have had an awareness of this benefit, even before science identified things like molecules, viruses or bacteria. Colloidal silver can be purchased at most health food stores for about ten to twenty dollars, but it is cheaper to make your own. If you don’t have one, you might think about purchasing a colloidal silver making kit. Check some out at “The Silver Solution”, website is www.colloidalsilver.com. Essential oils can really feel wonderful... to your sinuses when you are fighting off a cold. Eucalyptus has been shown to decrease swelling and inflammation blended with peppermint. One use is to put 3-4 drops of each on the palm of your hand with an equal amount of unscented body oil (wear an old shirt in case of staining). Rub your palms together and then smear this on your chest, throat, and the bottoms of your feet. The pores on the bottoms of your feet are large and will absorb the oil very well. I don’t recommend using the essential oils without diluting and mixing it or it will sting a little. The fragrance will linger for a while, and is quite soothing to the inner membranes of the nose, throat and lungs. This treatment is not new; the makers of Vicks Vapor rub have used the benefits of eucalyptus for decades in its cold remedy. Note: pine or cypress oils can be substituted for Eucalyptus.
What to do… when someone gets the dreaded cancer diagnosis? A loved one of mine has been diagnosed with Cowden’s syndrome, a genetic auto-somal, recessive disorder in which the body has a tendency to grow little tumors called hamartomas. The tumors are usually benign, but people with Cowden’s syndrome are quite a bit more prone to getting other types of non-benign cancers. After undergoing the threat of three of these other cancers, she asked me what I would do. I decided to share the information I give to her with you, my newsletter readers, as well. I hope you find the information useful, and I welcome your feedback.
Here is tumor fighting idea number one, Essiac Tea, named for a woman named Rene Caisse (her name spelled backwards). It has four herbs: burdock root, sheep sorrel, slippery elm, and Indian rhubarb root. Caisse was a Canadian nurse who learned of this tea from the Ojibwa Indians. It helps many ‘incurable ailments’, but she used it primarily for people with cancer, who the doctors had given up on. Caisse figured, “What have we got to lose?” Even two doctors told people to go to her, with a sense of relief that with this tea and the other advice she would give them, they would get well. She had a recovery hotel for such people for a while, but then was challenged for “practicing medicine that was outside her scope…” It is unfortunate that this still happens way too often to practitioners who help people using alternative methods.
How does Essiac tea work? One theory is that the four different herbs have a combination of nutrition and energy balancing effects on the body. Another is that the combination helps stimulate the body’s 'tumor- suppressing mechanism'. This four- herb tea is well known as an alternative treatment for incurable cancers. Some would argue, “People do these wacky things instead of getting proper medical treatment.” I remind them that Caisse gave this to the “incurable”…
They were people who had no further options for treatment available from physicians. The key word here is “incurable”, so I don’t know why any health professional would be against it. It’s herbal tea! Are pharmaceutical companies trying to quash it? Perhaps, they are. The most generous answer I can come up with is that well-meaning doctors don’t want people to get their hopes up on something, only to be disappointed. In my opinion, when a person is facing death, having “something to do” helps.
Essiac Tea is available online; I’ve used a product called Four Herb Tea from a company called Herbal Healer Academy. Different brands can be found in health food stores. They are condensed and you measure the liquid into water or juice, and there is also a pill form now.
