In all the news, either written, visual, or audio, I have noted the use of ‘expert’. I would ask the reader to consider whether or not to listen to some of these experts. They are sometimes presented to us blindly. Quick introductions that claim a professor or research analyst from some university of some country or state, without qualifications to help us be certain that this ‘expert’ is truly worth listening to. Are they honest? Did they receive any monetary gain that could have influenced their opinion? When you are given information, allow yourself to ponder and question whether it even applies to you.
I am an advocate of personal experimentation. A patient asked me about the Pulsed Electro Magnetic Therapy (PEMF) mat that her friend is selling. Its maker has made marvelous claims about it. I suggested that she visit a place where she could try the mat herself first. After trying it maybe a couple times – even for a reasonable fee – she could better decide if the cost of the PEMF mat would be worth it to her. I do have one at the office just now. If you would like to try it let me know.
Then, I compare the benefits of the PEMF to the reports of Electro Magnetic Frequency Syndrome. Reports that 5G towers within four hundred and fifty feet of a home or a school giving people headaches, stomach upsets, rapid heart rates, insomnia, pain, even skin rashes are quite alarming. My daughter was in an internship in Purdue one summer where she tried to identify a plasma differentiation after exposure to the micro waves of the cell phone microwaves. This was around 2005. She said they never found anything. She dismissed the alarming reports. Now, twenty years later, we have 5G towers and more research over more years and more people.
To summarize what I have read, some people are very sensitive to electromagnetic frequencies. The 5G has replaced the 4G and for those that are sensitive the severity of the symptoms increased dramatically. Women and children are affected by it more than men. Anyone who already has a neurological disorder like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or chronic fatigue syndrome, sensitivity to chemicals, especially toxins, are more likely to report problems. A 2019 report in the UK estimated the prevalence of EMF sensitivity at 5-30% mild, 1.5 to 3% moderate, and less than 1.5 % having severe sensitivity. Previous exposure to mold or heavy metals also seems to increase problems.
Advice to help people is limited. Try to get away from the EMF’s. Find an old cottage with minimal, only essential amenities. Turn off Wi-Fi and smart devices when not in use. Use wired connections such as Ethernet. Keep your living environment as clean of mold, chemicals, heavy metals as possible.
Changing the subject slightly, let me bring up the toxicity of fluoride. Fluoride’s neurotoxicity and IQ-lowering properties have been subject to debate for decades. Rather than debate it here let me tell you the research is showing that turmeric/curcumin has been identified to significantly decrease the oxidative stress of fluoride on the nerves. This was a real scientific experiment involving mice and their brains. It had a control group, a group that was exposed to fluoride with no turmeric and another group that had both. Then the presence of MDA (malondialdehyde) was measured in the brains of the mice. MDA is a well-known marker of oxidative damage. Turmeric helped and was labeled a neuroprotective substance. Papaya, a bright yellow-orange melon, was also listed as protective. The nutrients of vitamins A, B, C, potassium, magnesium, folic acid, calcium and iron and the fiber has therapeutic effects. Papaya seeds have been used to detoxify the liver. The eyes benefit from
zeaxanthin, lutein and meso-zeaxanthin, even to help protect you from the “blue light” of the computer screen. The antioxidants slow down cholesterol oxidation to help the heart, the brain gets “anti-aging” protection from the oxidative stress and inflammation “thus lowering the risk of neurodegenerative disorders” including Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s disease. It helps digestion, sleep and skin. Do you see this repeat theme I’m trying to pull off here?
Lastly, I read a very interesting article about how our DNA does repair itself. There are so many threats to our health, and most of them boil down to damage to our DNA so that our cells cannot replicate themselves very well. A book on this recommended by the article was Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself, by, Dr. William Li, the president and medical director of the Angiogenesis Foundation. We’ve been told DNA is quite fragile. It has these “telomeres” that break off in replication. UV radiation and all the aforementioned things; all these modern living things we need to adapt to can do us harm! Constant exposure will surely have an effect on our health, right? According to this author, “there’s no need to be overly worried.” With the right fruits and vegetables acting as anti-oxidants, the DNA has systems to repair itself. He says there are reactive oxygen species in us that are part of the problem, but the body also uses them to be part of the solution. He does not recommend lots of supplements (Let me bring up a study done long ago. That study had smokers that took lots of synthetic vitamin A to NO avail. In some cases it seemed as if the supplements made the smokers worse.). A more recent study was done in Italy with young smokers who consumed 250 grams of steamed broccoli daily for 10 consecutive days and experienced a 41% reduction in oxidative damage to cell DNA and a 23% increase in antioxidant capacity. The solution presented in this article was to eat bright colored fruits and vegetables. Develop a taste for them. Dr. Li believes that maintaining a healthy balanced lifestyle including positive emotions, regular exercise and proper diet are
more beneficial for DNA protection and repair than supplements. I will have to get that book.
